Kunibert Lennerts has been a university professor of facility management since 2000 and the head of the Institute of Technology and Management in Construction at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, a University of Excellence, since 2012. He was appointed the first German university professor of facility management after having been responsible for one of the most heterogeneous and extensive property portfolios in Germany as head of the real estate and facility management division at the headquarters of Deutsche Bahn Immobiliengesellschaft mbH in Frankfurt am Main.

Dr Lennerts studied industrial engineering (Dipl.-Wi.-Ing.) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and as an MBA fellow at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his doctorate in civil engineering (Dr.-Ing. summa cum laude) from the Fridericiana.

He is the author of numerous publications in the real estate and hospital management fields, with a focus on facility management, life cycle costs, sustainability and digitalisation. Dr Lennerts is also a guest professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology in China. He was a committee member of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and the Board of the German Economic Institute for many years. As a founding member, he is also active on the sustainability council of the ECE Group and in task forces of the German Property Federation (ZIA).

In 2001, he established Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kunibert Lennerts Consulting Engineers (ikl), which became ikl GmbH in 2010. He is CEO of ikl GmbH, the engineering consulting firm specialised in sustainable solutions for the real estate industry.
